Ask about your skin

Skin treatment consultation requests

A provider can look at your skin and talk through options such as facials, chemical peels or microneedling. Start with a short request.

Why the menu looks different everywhere

Two med spas in Des Moines can list the same treatment under different names, or offer a facial that looks nothing like the one down the road. That is normal. Skin treatments are a family of services, and each provider builds its own menu from it.

The family has four main branches. Facials are manual services: cleansing, exfoliation, masks. Chemical peels apply a solution that is left on for a measured time. Microneedling uses fine needles on a handheld device. Light-based treatments use machines that emit light at set wavelengths.

If a name on a menu is unclear, ask what the service involves step by step. A licensed provider can explain it and say whether it fits you.

Questions worth asking about a skin treatment

A consultation goes both ways. The provider asks about you, and you can ask about the treatment. Useful questions include:

  1. What exactly is this treatment, and how deep does it go?
  2. Who performs it, and what is their license or training?
  3. Is it suitable for my skin type and tone?
  4. Do any of my medicines or conditions change things?
  5. How many visits do people usually have, and how far apart?
  6. What should I avoid ahead of time and afterward, such as sun or certain products?
  7. What side effects are possible, and what should I do if one happens?

You can find more on the questions to ask page.

The week before a skin consultation

A consultation on its own usually involves no treatment, though some providers can treat at the same visit if you both agree. If that is possible, a few things are worth asking about ahead of time:

  • whether to pause strong exfoliants or vitamin A creams beforehand
  • whether to avoid tanning, sunburn and self-tanner
  • whether to skip waxing or threading on the area
  • whether to arrive without makeup

Ask the provider or their office rather than guessing. Never stop a prescribed medicine without checking with whoever prescribed it.

Questions about skin treatments

Can I have a skin treatment if I am pregnant?

Some skin treatments and products are usually avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and others may still be an option. Tell the provider at the start of the consultation, and they will decide what is suitable. For questions about your pregnancy, your own doctor or midwife is the right person to ask.

How many visits do skin treatments take?

It depends on the treatment, your skin and what you want to ask about. Some people have a single facial. Peels, microneedling and light-based treatments are often planned as a series. A licensed provider can tell you what is typical for a given treatment, without promising a set number.

Should I avoid the sun before a skin treatment?

Many providers ask you to avoid tanning, sunburn and self-tanner before peels and light-based treatments, since recent sun can change what they are willing to do. Ask the office for its own instructions before your visit, and mention any recent sun at the consultation.
